NY is in for a BBQ reawakening thanks to Sand’s Jerk Hut and traveling carnival concept out of Brooklyn.
I can’t imagine going to another Texas BBQ pitmaster before I return to this Jamaican Smoked BBQ concept – it’s a reawakening of what Smoked BBQ is and that the Southern States did NOT invent it.
I have always been a fan of BBQ, but NYC has fallen short in the category – and what more impressive way for NYC to make a splash than to support traditional smoke barbeque from around the world. When Darlene invited us to come experience Sand’s Jerk Hut on a Monday afternoon, my anticipation precluded my visit. I had never tried Jamaican BBQ, and I knew how excited our network of writers, publishers, and eaters would be. Our goal – to help Darlene spread Jerk Hut in the form of a traveling Village (see: Jerk Hut Village) concept, around the country.
Sands isn’t your grandfather’s jerk meat. The smoking process mellows the heat and introduces an entirely new experience to both BBQ plate and the Jamaican meal. You’ve never tasted anything like it.
First, the jerk chicken with 4 cheese Mac and cheese and secret seasonings, along with a shrimp mashed potatoes with string beans, carrots, and coconut milk. Second, a pork shoulder. Third, a smoked brisket. We were out for the count. People in the room were falling asleep and it was only 12 noon.
This is a must try! Book them while they’re hot.
