CHARLIE’S REDHOUSE FARM | MA

The Cothen Family
Bianca (Mama bear), Josh (Papa bear), Jojo (Brother bear), Nora ( Sister bear), and Mable (Baby bear).

Before there were brother and sister and baby bears, there were Bianca and Josh, and they lived in the woods of Maine. They built their home out of recycled materials and lived off of the grid for 3 years before moving to New Hampshire to farm on family land.
After some soul-searching and some trial-and-error, they finally stumbled upon Charlie’s Red House Farm.
Bianca and Josh love working as a team and enjoy having a job where they can be with their kids. Their farm plan is based on the work of Jean Martin Fortier, and involves organic soil building techniques, low impact hand tools, and bio-intensive crop planting.

Josh grew up near New Orleans, in Mississippi and joined the navy at nineteen as an electronics technician.

He loves problem solving and fixing things and has a knack for building efficient systems with smart technology. After 9 years in the Navy, he left a job as a Network Administrator and Telecommunications specialist to farm and homestead. Josh is a disabled veteran, and he was finding it very hard to condition back into society after 9 years in the Navy. Suffering from severe depression, and degenerative joints, Josh felt very lost in life, and was struggling to find a passion.

Josh also went to wooden boat building school for a year in Kennebunkport Maine. He enjoys the constant challenge of figuring out how to grow food sustainably and provide a great life for his family. When not working on the farm you can find Josh in his woodworking shop and spending quality time with the family!

Bianca grew up in New England and has always had a passion for taking care of others. After obtaining a degree in Biology and 8 years of work at Massachusetts General Hospital, Bianca took a turn towards what truly made her happy and became a birth doula, childbirth educator, and gardener. When not on the farm, Bianca can be found baking amazing bread, chasing the kids around, supporting mommas through pregnancy and childbirth, and aspiring towards midwifery.
Farming and raising kids each have challenges of their own; for us, they are an adventure, taken together.

Mission Statement
Being a farmer is a very rewarding job. We get to know our food and nourish those around us. We are proud of our position as farmers and love living everyday surrounded by our passion. As we look into the future of farming, we again get very excited, as we see the shift of culture. We see that people want a connection with local, organic food and with the farmers that grow it. Many say that there is no better time to get into farming, and we can not agree more!
The world is going to need good quality holistic farmers. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization is foreseeing a food crisis in the years to come, and a large number of local farmers, paying close attention to the maximizing the efficiency of their soils will be needed for the recovery and revolution of modern agriculture.

Charlie’s Red House Farm is committed to producing organic food to benefit the community and environment, focusing on the most sustainable and holistic farming techniques.

Bright Future:
Farmers must always look to the future, and the same is true of Charlie’s Red House Farm. We are thrilled to learn and carry on the wonderful vision of Charlie’s Red House Farm, while contributing to the evolving future of contemporary agriculture.

Recently Charlies Red House Farm posted on a farm finder website looking for new farmers that are passionate about their vision and the future of organic farms. As aspiring farmers who have a burning. passion to feed ourselves, children and neighbors with good quality food for generations, we were happy to answer the call.

After meeting with owners Kees and Paul, we quickly learned that we have overlapping values for the future of the farm, and decided on a trial year of farming to see if it would be a good fit for all.

We could not be happier for the amazing opportunity to grow more quality food, doing what we love with our family, and gaining organic certification. Charlie’s Red House Farm has clearly been loved and cared for beautifully, and we are happy to be taking part in the farms story growing and adding to the already stellar operation. We are excited to share our story as it unfolds, how your food is grown, and how we function as a working family.
This year you will find us taking our wares to the Metro Boston area. As a startup, we were drawn to Kendall Square, the home of Boston Based startups. Kendall Square farmers market will be Monday 11am-6pm & Thursdays 11am-2pm starting June 4th. We are thrilled to be bringing great options to those in the city working towards our future health!
Thank you and Happy Growing Season!
